I was born in Boston in South Lincolnshire in 1978. I lived there until I was 20, attending Pinchbeck East Primary School, King's School Peterborough (where I was also a cathedral chorister) and Spalding Grammar School. On completing my A Levels I spent a couple of years working out what I wanted to do next and eventually decided on heading to Loughborough University where I managed to achieve my BSc (Hons) in Computing and Management (First Class). I then went over to Keele University to continue with my study and completed a PGCE in ICT and Maths. I have been teaching since then, and after 2 years in Manchester, I have since taught in schools in and around Loughborough where I now live. I am currently head of the ICT and Business Studies faculty at a school in Nottingham.
I became active in politics while in Manchester and worked with the Liberal Democrats. I decided, in 2006 that I was unable to campaign for the party for a number of reasons and opted to join the Labour party. I was chosen as candidate for Loughborough Southfields ward on Charnwood Borough Council in 2007 and myself and Jill (my co-councillor) were successful in retaining the Town Centre seat for Labour. In my spare time, I am an active member of my local church, regularly leading music as well as managing the church football team. I enjoy watching live events of any sort (including sport, theatre etc.) and am happiest when with friends eating cake! I have recently discovered that I quite like running and completed the London Marathon in April 2010 in a time of 3:28:35. I have just joined an athletics club in an attempt to get even quicker!
